Community Seedling Nurseries

Community Seedling Nurseries is one of the three cornerstone initiatives of Action for Shea Parklands (ASP), establishing localized tree nurseries that are managed directly by women's cooperatives across shea-producing regions. Rather than relying on centralized planting programs, this model puts propagation capacity in the hands of the communities who depend on shea parklands most.

Each nursery site is equipped with grafting and seed-selection training so that cooperatives can produce high-yielding, climate-resilient shea seedlings suited to local soil and rainfall conditions. Seedlings are then distributed to surrounding farms and degraded parkland areas, restoring tree density while generating a modest income stream for the cooperatives that run the nurseries.

Since launch, the initiative has supported the planting of millions of trees across the region, with a growing network of nursery sites acting as long-term stewards of parkland regeneration rather than one-off planting events. GSA continues to expand the program in partnership with local agricultural extension services and member organizations.
